How To Eliminate ‘Killer Germs’ With Smudging
Smudging is very popular these days and the reason is that different studies say that it might be very beneficial and even more beneficial than cleansing their homes of negative spirits and energies.
Actually, this is a method used by Native Americans when they burn sacred herbs so they can produce smoke. One of their most smudged herbs was sage, and you can find it in many types:
- Pineapple sage
- Garden Sage
- Purple sage
- Russian Sage
- Berggarten Sage
- Golden Sage
All of these six different types can be different in use and color. However, all are great for your garden. One study published in the journal Ethnopharmacology back in 2007 said that with 60 minutes of smudging, you can decrease the bacteria by 95%. Smoke is able to maintain air purity for up to 24 hours if the room is closed.
This study used scientific validation of the Native Americans’ ancient knowledge and comprehensive analysis as a base regarding the results from ethnopharmacological aspects of using smoke caused by natural products for health care and therapy. They were using the Microlog database and Biolog microplate panels.
The researchers made an observation of the treatment of medicinal smoke that stemmed from the mixture of medicinal and odoriferous herbs in wood. It was shown by the results that the aerial bacterial population decreased by 94%. Smoke is able to disinfect and purify the air and clean the environment for up to 24 hours if the room is closed. It can purify the air from pathogenic bacteria such as Staphylococcus lentus, Corynebacterium urealyticum, Kocuria rosea, Enterobacter aerogenes, etc.
It was shown that medicinal smoke may completely eliminate diverse human pathogenic bacteria and plants from the air in a confined space.
There were clear conclusions because the benefits of smudging were absolutely viable. It is a method that is entirely different from the process of using medications since overuse of antibiotics can cause a big problem regarding superbugs and extreme pollution. This is the reason why destroying bacteria using this way is very popular.
Many conventional sterilization methods can result in many unhealthy chemicals, and they are not safe and are also less effective. An additional advantage of smudging is that it has a natural origin and it is a completely safe process to perform.
However, you should be aware that there is a research deficiency in that area, and the reasons are unknown. We are expecting this to happen in the near future.

Additionally, you can make your own smudge stick.
You will need:
- Yarn, string, or twine
- A little bit of dried rose petals, rosemary, lavender and sage
- First, layer the herbs one over another.
- Then, tie the bottom of the bunch of herbs using a string.
- Where the string is tied up, add a rose petal and wrap the string again, this time upward the bunch. Add petals and wrap until everything is wound together. Now, using the other string, tie the other end. It is that simple.
